-Bring knee inside half guard up, and as soon as you lift it you heavy hip, slide down the tiba, try to keep the armpit close to the hips, then precede to bring leg up to face then when he goes to grab it go for the sideswitch.
2. X-pass / half gurad pass -3 Minutes
-when he goes to bring his back flat to go de la hiva, you have to bring the hand thats inside to block the hip then grap the knee then kick foot out to finish with the Jt xpass
3. Backstep pass -3 Minutes
-if the guy doesnt swich his hips keep the knee lifted, but with the inside hand grab lapel other hand grabs pants and traps the bottom leg, then you do a big backstep to pass and if he doesnt feed you the knee for the sideswitch plant head and jump legs to the other side to take the back
4. Reverse half guard pass opponet shoots underhook -3 Minutes
-guy shoots in with underhook from half guard, wizard his arm, get leg thats inside the half guard up and then sit on his bottom leg, put the top hand behind his head to back step to the other side, grap the top leg with a handle grip with the palm of your hand facing the floor then start scooping your hips out to get the leg out.

Week 2

( Top Knee Behind the Hips)

-Tight passing-

-The knee isnt blocking and your past the knee-

Getting his back flat

-If the guy turns into you and is still on his side first walk his body to get him flat

Arm bar from top half

-The guy is flat you turn into him so your head is facing his legs and your side is on his, he leaves arm behind go under arm under the elbow control wrist with other hand finish arm bar

Reverse top half guard pass

- your tunred into him so your head is facing the legs, climb very high on the person so that your side is on their head and arms, if the person is trying to push you down walk the arm up by lifting your elbow and walking your hand up to push the arm to the other side, then once you have them traped, Walk your foot up thats in their half guard up to their butt, then use your bottom leg to push down on their bottom leg, scoop your hips away from them without lifting your hips, then push on the top leg to pull your foot out.

Bear hug top half pass, with sideswitch

-Guy is pushing on your head trying to push it to the other side, so you connect your hands together and bear hug his legs, once you have both his legs you sprawl your legs to unlock the half guard, now once legs are free post head right in front of his belly/hip then do a headstand to jump your feet to the other side making sure that one leg hits at a time not both at same time.

Week 3

(From the Under Hook)

-Fighting from the overhook-

-Person on bottom gets an underhook

-first thing wizard, then block the shoulder and get him pinned on his side, then pop your bottom knee through, extend overhook straight so that you can get the armbar by turning you hips away form him and rotating you back away from him, this is why when you shoot the underhook from the bottom you shoot it low on his hip and not high on his shoulder.

-Knee cut to back take

- you go for the underhook but his keeping his arm away by trying to go to deep half guard, pop the knee through and kneecut him, he starts turning to his knees then either start looking towards his back or lock up the gulotine by getting your arm around the the neck and connecting it with the hand and twisting the forearm to get the finish.

-Reverse (Backstep) Half Guard Pass

- Same scenario as the first two, person has the underhook your wizarding and he is trying to go deep, First thing make sure all of your weigh is on the bottom leg so that your sitting on the leg, once you sit on the leg do a big backstep to the otherside, reach under the head and crossface him with the top hand and with the bottom hand push on his top knee as you scoop your bottom leg out, if syour having trouble getting your leg out of his half guard kick the bottom leg way and get your leg out.

Week 4

1 Flow Drill #1

-First flow drill consists of all of the moves from passing the knee in front safety position. All of the flow drills flow together so after you do a pass let your partner get back to half guard so you can do the next technique

-Kneecut: with knee cut bring inside up and pop through then cut knee down the tibia, then land with your hips on the mat, feed them the inside knee and go for sideswitch

-X-pass: when you go for the kneecut the guy turns flat on his back to grab de la hiva so put your hand on top of the bottom knee when its coming up then kick the leg back and make a x with your hands to land with knee on belly or feed him the knee again for a sideswitch.

-Backstep pass: Step inside knee up and then circle the leg so that you can trap the bottom leg, post your head in their belly do a big backstep to get pass the guard then post the head on the mat and jump to the other side to get the jt pin.

2 Flow Drill Week 2#

-Tight passing flow dril

-Armbar Reverse Half Guard: guy is blocking with his knee so you pin him and keep elbows tight to his belly, bring arm across and switch hips to get to reverse half guard top, guy shot the underhook so you bring your arm under his elbow for armbar

-Reverse Half Guard Pass: guy doesn’t shoot underhook so you walk your arm up to stay high on him in half guard, bring bottom leg up to block the hips and get your leg out

-Bear Hug Pass: Instead of locking him in half guard grab both of his legs and connect your hands once you have both legs grabbed and hands connected sprawl your legs to open the half guard and then post your head to finish with a sideswitch.

3 Flow Drill Week 3#

-All the passes in this week are when the guy shoots for the underhook

-Armbar: guy shoots the underhook, bring your knee thats inside through and put it on his hip so that hes trapped and you have mobility, bring arm that is wizarding all the way through to the mat and turn your hips away from him to get the armbar

-Backtake: Arm bar isn’t there then with the knee that you poped through cut down the tibia, guy turns to his knees bring wizard arm out and on top on his back to his armpit so that you can get the over under control and take the back

-Reverse Half Top Pin Pass: pop knee through put it on his hip then sit cut knee through but not all the way just so you can sit on top of his legs, once legs are pinned take a big backstep to the other side and then bounce on your foot while pushing on his top knee to get you leg out.

DECEMBER TEST RESULTS …CLICK HERE TO SEE

Week 1

Cutting the corner

-2mins

-Start at the north south postion, push the head down, forearm goes on the back of the neck and hand under armpit, to switch to the other side keeping your hips connected to the other person when you finish

Switching Sides

-2 mins

-The person is gonna try to roll by turning their head towards you and rolling, so when you see the person turn their head towards you switch to the other side, going back and forth having your partner looking to opposite sides as you transition.

Taking the back

-3 mins

-your hips are connected to them, grab the hip and the shoulder to pull them 45 degrees towards you, getting you hooks in to take the back, and then can finish with the rear naked choke

Crush Hips to Jt Pin

-2 mins

-you pull them towards you to take the back but they resist so you go with them smashing your hips on top of their legs pining them walk all the way to the other side and finish with the JT Pin.

Wrist Control Back Take

-3 mins

- you cannot get the overunder position, so instead go underheath the  arms and grab the wrists then pulling them 45 degrees getting your forearm to the floor to take the back.

Week 2

Turn Wrist Back Take

-3 mins

- you go for a the 45 degree pull back take where your controlling his hips by always keep your hips connected to his, so now with your hand under the arm grab his wrist and turn it to open his elbow this is gonna make the space so that you can slide your knee in where you made the space, now get your top hook, lift him up a little get your bottom hook, finish with the choke.

Pillow back Retake

-3mins

- you do a normal 45 degree pull backtake, but you cant get your knee inside because he shoveled his hips away from you so bring the knee that would come inside all the way up to the head to make a pillow behind his head, now hook the top hook, bring him to the otherside and now your top hook becomes your bottom hook, finish again with the rear naked choke

Belly Down Backtake

-3 mins

- person did the same thing and shoveled their hips but very far away so you cant slide the knee towards the head so keep the over under control and start walking your body so your in the north south position but with your belly on the mat now start walking im up so he’s sitting on his butt now start pulling him to either side so that he is forced to plant a hand once he plants a hand hook your leg over the arm and take the back, now you have the back with a arm traped

Week 3

Side Control, To Turtle Transition Back-Take

-3 mins

-you pull the guy forty-five degrees and get over under control on the guys back, guy falls flat so you put your foot thats on bottom right next to his hip so when he goes to turn to his knees you can slide the foot right in and now you have your bottom hook, put your top hook finish with the rear naked choke.

Pillow back Retake

-3 mins

-your in side control on the guy with over under contorl and his elbow is down, you dont want to go to belly down backtake because his back is not flat on the mat , so what you have to do is put your top hook in climp high on him bring him ontop of you then to the other side so that the top hook becomes the bottom hook

-3 mins

Ezequiel (Gi) / Arm Triangle (No-Gi)

Ezequiel (Gi)

This move will be perform any time we find our opponent in the side control postion but he is defending the hooks and is hard to pin.

He/She leaves their elbows low enough and is mainly worried about the collar choke which is the most common atttack form this poistion.

We drive our hand (hand closest to his hips) underneath the armpit that is on top all the way wrapping around the neck and shoulders and grabbing the sleeve of  the other hand with the fingers inside of the sleeve.

The other hand that is lending the sleeve makes a closed fist and presses against the  neck.

Concentrate on the squeeze of the veins not on breaking the neck ( ITS A CHOKE). Make sure shoulder is compressed and that you feel the soft part of the neck around your arm not the hard spinal cord. If done right this choke requires no effort.

No I proceed to do like a pillow back re-take shown earlier in the curriculum. (I put the pilllow/knee close bi his head while holding him tight to me insert the upper hook and take him to the other side)

MAJOR DIFFERENCE: When I am almost on the other side i scoop from underneath him and finish almost like we finish the collar choke from the back by putting our forearm paraller to the ground. Ouss!

Arm Triangle (No-Gi)

January 2010 – Turtle Positon: Defending The Back

JANUARY TEST RESULTS …CLICK HERE TO SEE

Learn to defend the back so this doesn’t happen to you!

WEEK #1

Proper Turtle Position

-The proper turtle position consists of keeping your elbows tight inside to your midsection not allowing the person to get their feet inside and take your back, also having your hands crossed, shoulders crunched up to protect your neck from chokes. Make sure you keep your chin ducked and keep a good base.

Defending The Ball

- Defending the ball consists of keeping a tennis ball underneath your chin and holding it there to simulate you ducking your chin. Now, with the drill your going to be in the proper turtle position with the tennis ball underneath your chin protecting it just like you would if someone was trying to choke you and your partner is going to be trying to take the tennis ball from underneath your chin, if they manage to get the ball its ten pushups for the person who had the tennis ball.

Defending Turtle To Closed Guard Escape

- Now your going to defend the back with the proper turtle but you find a time when the person isn’t applying enough pressure so you go for the escape. For the escape what your going to do is use the knee closest to your opponent to block them from coming into you. Once you block with the knee your going to apply good pressure and grab over the persons shoulder making sure to grab the gi material. Now that you have the good pressure with the knee use the pressure to swing your other leg all the way through the gap you made with your hand over the shoulder and leg blocking the hip to get to closed guard.

Defending Turtle Shoulder Rolls

- To do the next escape you have to understand how to shoulder rolls, so what your going to do is first see how comfortable you are at bringing your legs behind your head and balancing on your shoulders. If you can touch your feet behind your head awesome, if you can touch your knees your very flexible and will be great at this technique. So now that you have this mastered start walking your feet to either side of your body rotating your neck when you switch sides so that you can get your legs further and further back.

WEEK #2

Defending Turtle By Rolling On Opposite Shoulder

- Another great escape to get back your guard is rolling on your opposite shoulder, this requires understanding how to roll on your shoulders, and have balance in that position. To do the shoulder roll escape the first thing you need to do is just like in the previous escape make space with your knee. Now that you made the space with your knee your going to roll on your shoulders, making sure to roll on your opposite shoulder. When you go for the shoulder roll try to connect your head with your heel this will really give you the momenteum to roll all the way through and get your guard back.

Defending Turtle : Sakuraba Roll

- The person makes the mistake of trying to sit on your back without getting his hooks, leaving both of his legs on the outside allowing to to roll straight forward, to take the person back or end up on top

Defending Turtle : Knee-Bar Denfense

- Person makes the mistake of leaving one of his legs in the middle, so to defend your going hook your leg over and reach under for the leg making sure to reach to the outside. Once you have the leg roll on your shoulder to get to the finger four lock with your legs and finish with the knee-bar either by pushing down with your heels or locking the finger four and hipping up while controlling the ankle to finish.

WEEK #3

Scoop Under Escape to Back Attack

- The Guy has your back, first thing you want to do is protect your neck from chokes. Now scoop your body down as far as you can then once you free of the hooks start rotating on your shoulders away from him so that way you can look to pin both of his legs when coming up and already be looking at taking his back.

Seatbelt Grip Back Escape (No-Gi Version)

- First you have to get rid of the seatbelt grip when the person has your back, so what your going to do to open the hands is, fall to the side that are would be on the bottom. Now what your going to do is get the hands free to do that arch your back to get your head free, once your head is free starting looking to rotate on your shoulers away from him to take his back.

Seatbelt Grip Back Escape (Gi Version)

- Person takes your back and gets the over under grip controlling your back. What your going to do now is fall to the opposite side that you would in No-Gi but your not going to worry about the choke what your going to do is straighten your leg to get rid of the hook and windsheild wipe your other hand underneath the leg to get to the deep half guard. Now you can turn into him quick to come on top and either finish in the over-under or passing the guard.

Double Under Back Control Escape

- Now that he has both of your arms controlled your upper body is free, so what you want to do is go high on him towards his head. To do that fall to one side and keep inching your way up on him. Now when the person turns into you two things can happen he turns into your fast and it puts you in half-guard or you bring your bottom knee all the way through so that it is blocking his hip. When you use it to block his hip take your other leg and step all the way over to trap his shoulder for a shoulder lock and wrist lock.

WEEK #4

Flow Drill #1

-Flow drill #1 is going to conist of all the basic and most effective turtle guard escapes from Week 1 and week 2, in this order. First we are going to do the  Rolling On Opposite Shoulder escape once to each side, followed by the Closed Guard Escape making sure you apply good pressure with your leg arnd be able to balance in that position, then sitting through to finish in closed guard. Once those two are done you will go to the turtle position person will stand behind you with out any feet in the middle both feet on either side of you so that you can do the Sakuraba Escape and after doing all those rinse and repeat from the begining until time is completed

Flow Drill #2

-Flow dril #2 is going to be of all the back escapes that we just drilled with last weeks ciriculium. All of these escapes are on the basis on where the person tries to grab you. If the persno is just trying to grab you around the neck then you go for the first escape Scoop Under Escape to Back Attack where you slide your body down, then move yourself so your sitting on his leg and its trapped that way he can’t get it out, then procede with doing a crunch to grab the bottoms of your partners feet and doing a shoulder roll away from him to finish the escape in the JT position. Next would be when the person gets the seat belt grip we are going to be doing the Seatbelt Grip Back Escape so for this one you are going to scoop down just like in the previous but, when you get your back flat your going to windshield wipe your hand inside the leg and then quickly turn into him to finish on top. The Final one is the Double Under Grip Back Escape where the person grabs underneath both of your arms, so for this scenario there is only one way out and that is to go up and push the hands down yourself , once your body is free from the hands or his hands are around your waist line block the hip and turn into him with your elbow on the mat, now your going to use the hand on the hip to pull your knee out, now do a backstep so that the person will try turning into you, once the person goes to turn into you, step over them to trap his shoulder and finish with the shoulder lock, and wrist lock.

Feburary 2010 – Closed Guard Bottom

FEBRUARY TEST RESULTS …CLICK HERE TO SEE

WEEK #1

Breaking the posture and Know Good Posture

GI

-The most important part of the closed guard is being able break the person posture and start looking for sweeps and submissions, grip breaking, and using your legs to bring the person into you. In the Gi when the person goes to get good posture the first thing you need to do is break the grip on your collar. Good postrure meaning the person has a grip on both your lapels one finger on the inside of both lapels and other hand blocking the hip, make sure you look toward the ceiling and keep good posture on the center of the chest and the hip. To break the posture what you are going to do is break is grip on the center of your chest, to do that grab a top grip on the sleeve and go under the arm and grab your own wrist, and lift it toward the ceiling. Now drag go underneath the arm and grab over his arm and grab the cross lapel to trap the arm.

-Also one grip break is going to lead you to the over hook like explained in the previous the other is going to leave you with the overhook grip this is going to depend on where you pull his arm if you pull the arm up and over you head then you can go to his back, if you pull the arm and then overhook and grab cross lapel then you land in the previously stated position.

No-GI

- To break the posture No-GI pull them in with your legs and pull on the elbows toward the inside. Now overhook the arm and hold on to the top of the head to control the posture. Make sure that you keep good pressure on the top of the head and control the arm as well as you can.

- Break the posture by swimming your hands inside his while lifting your hips off the ground and doing a circular motion until his/her hand reach the ground.

Stuff Arm Triangle

GI/No-GI

- Now that you got the guys posture broken, were going to start looking for attacks, the first one being the triangle. First what you need to do is grab the wrist with your hand then keep your hips out to one side. By shrimping your hips out, which will get your leg crossed with your opponents. Now you can use the arm that you have controlled stuff it through and bring the other leg up and over. Now grab your shin over the top, step on the hip to turn yourself perpendicular with your opponent lock your leg over the shin to lock up the triangle. To get the finish squeeze your knees together, raise your hips, and then pull down his head to get the tap.

Kimura

GI/No-GI

- You broke the guys grips, broke his posture he made the mistake of putting their hands on the mat, now what you need to do is know that the hands on the mat is a trigger to go for this next technique. First what your going to do is sit up, grap the wrist with your same side arm and go over the arm and grab your own wrist. Now get your hips out to the side of the arm and use your knee to push on the top of the shoulder. Raise his arm towards the celing and get the finish with the kimura.

WEEK #2

Attention: The following techniques are shown by Mike Fowler a Lloyd Irvin Black Belt. They are put here to give you a general idea of the moves.  Nevertheless there might be differences in the way we teach our techniques and we expect you to demonstrate them in your test as we show you. Realize Mike Fowler might not be able to discuss all the details of a bump sweep in a short video.

third law bjj

- WEEK 1 and 2

Drills: Armbar Drill (alone), Shimping In Place Drill, Shrimping , Guard Recovery Drill, Guard Recovery –> Upsidedown guard Drill

This week is mainly going to be devoted to when the person stands up in your guard. What sweeps you can do , and more scenarios from the closed guard, including the ommoplata, a super effective technique from the closed guard.

Gi

Kimura To Ommoplata - You go for lets say a bump sweep to kimura but the person defends by trapping his arm in between his thigh and calf so you can’t get his hand out and he is pushing on your chest so you cannot come up. So when you go for the kimura its going to make a little space for your hand to come in and straigten his arm to bend the elbow away from you for the ommoplata. Once you have the ommoplata remember to pull him 45 degrees and get him flat. Once he is flat raise your hips into the arm to finish the shoulder lock

Standing armbar – Your opponent stands up in your closed guard, with his weight over-top of you. Exposing his arms, now what your going to do is open your guard to get your hips under your opponent. Now use your hips to pivot underneath him grabbing one of the arms and bringing your hips perpendicular with the arm.

Standing Omoplata sweep – your breaking grips inside of the closed guard the person, stands up your going to put your hand around the leg so that your bicep is on the leg grabbing the sleeve. Make sure when your going for the omoplata you extend your hips up and turn his elbow away from you. Controlling the person posture, raising your hips to finish the omoplata.

HandStand sweep: The same situation as the armbar and ommoplata sweep, the person stands up in your closed guard. your going to go under neath the leg with the same are as you did previously with the ommoplata sweep but with the oppposite hand plant it like your going to do a handstand. Now push the person with your hips and pull the leg with your arm to finish the sweep.

April 2010 – How to Open The Closed Guard

So far in our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Curriculumn we have covered:

Open Guard --> Guard Passing --> Half Guard --> Passing Half Guard/ Half Guard Top
--> Turtle Position Taking The Back --> Closed Guard -->

And now what naturally follows is to learn how to open the closed guard so that we can get some offense going. The truth is that if we are not able to open the guard we will never be able to improve our position and therefore be subject to an intense series of memorized attacks as we have learned in the previous months. Opening a great closed guard player’s guard or a much taller opponent guard can be quite the challenge and this is why we are devoting an entire month to this subject.

After we are done learning how to open the closed guard,  we will study open guard basics and a different set of attacks in May 2010 than those covered in 2009.  This will naturally affect the way we go about passing the guard. Earlier in the curriculum we assumed we had a resilient opponent that went from Open Guard- Half-Guard-Turtle…and will not give up until we took his back and finished him/her from there. This time around we will manage to pass the guard and we will learn to finish from side control, and keep improving our position to devastate our opponent.

Make sure to bring NOTEBOOKS!

Week 1

No-Gi

1-) Good Posture:

  • Knees positioning on the ground.
  • Look at the ceiling
  • Elbows straight and stapling the oponnent, One hand on the hips other one on the chest
  • Gripping will Change from No-Gi to Gi but what is important is that  we do not let it slide. Places to grip under neath the Ribs and Under the Chest !
  • Hand on the chest killing sitting up motions like bump sweep. Hand on the Hip Killing Hip movements.
  • Don’t put your toes curled  on the ground, Don’t put hands in the ground.

2-) Grip Fighting

  • Person starts bringing one shoulder off the ground–> Walk by opening the base of your legs towards the side the shoulder is lifted
  • Person lifts both Shoulders walk towards the hip you are stapling with your weight and third point pressure
  • Person Drags Your Arm . Cross your hands and regroup.
  • Person goes for your head …look towards the ceiling.

3-)Surfing Guard Break

  • Starting Point is Good Posture. If at any point Posture is sacrificed or good grips you have to go back ASAP by all means back to Good Posture. DO NOT  CONTINUE TO OPEN THE GUARD WHEN YOUR POSTURE HAS BEEN SACRIFICED. IT WILL RESULT IN DISASTER.
  • Remember to open your legs with open your legs by open follow approach. Your hips should be 80 -85 degrees in comparison to his. Pus your butt out to explode the legs.
  • Once you manage to pen the leg step over with knee and search for the under hook.
  • If person grabs head with one hand due to a superior reach advantage walk towards passing in the direction of the hand that is not gripping.
  • Use the bottom of your eyes to look not your head.
  • Watch out for leaning forward when starting your movement.
  • IF your legs are longer or if you are taller per say and your hips find the right angle the opponents leg should explode open without need of your hand.
  • Always start with good posture and a huge base. Then open it more and follow little by little. THIS IS A GAME OF INCHES.
